Examining the Role of Diversity and Inclusion in Arizona Archaeology
2020-11-18
This webinar on Arizona Preservation in Place addresses the topics of bias, cultural justice, objectivity, race, and racism within the field of Arizona archaeology. The session will commence with an introduction by William White discussing the issue of whiteness in archaeology, followed by a question-driven conversation involving a diverse group of professional archaeologists from Native, Black, Hispanic, and White backgrounds in Arizona. The objective of the webinar is to raise awareness about the various perspectives of Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color (BIPOC) in archaeology, the impact of objectivity, the profession's historical bias towards a white Euroamerican standpoint, the implications of the lack of diversity on preservation and research priorities, and how history and archaeology are interpreted in Arizona in an effort to foster trust.
