106 Strong: Protecting Section 106

The Arizona Preservation Foundation supports 106 Strong, a national effort to protect Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and the important role it plays in protecting historic places, cultural resources, and Tribal heritage.

Section 106 requires federal agencies to consider the effects of federally funded, licensed, or permitted projects on historic properties and to provide an opportunity for historic preservation interests, Tribes, and communities to participate in that process. For Arizona – with our remarkable archaeological, architectural, cultural, and historic resources – Section 106 is an essential preservation tool.

Proposed federal legislation, including provisions in the Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act, could significantly weaken the Section 106 process and reduce opportunities for meaningful public and Tribal participation. The potential consequences for historic places and cultural resources across Arizona are substantial.

APF urges Arizonans to learn more about 106 Strong and make their voices heard. Contact your U.S. Senators and Representative and let them know that Section 106 matters to Arizona and should be protected – not weakened.

The 106 Strong coalition is working to build a broad national network of preservation organizations, Tribal Nations, community leaders, and individuals committed to protecting Section 106. There are also opportunities to help grow the coalition, share the story locally, and support the national advocacy effort.
